WRDTC Fifth Annual Conference 2016 – ‘Data And Methods: Innovations And Connections’

The fifth Annual Conference of the White Rose DTC took place on 15th June 2015 at University of Leeds. The theme of the conference was ‘Data and Methods: Innovations and Connections’.

The conference was attended by over 150 PhD students from the universities of Sheffield, Leeds and York. Attendees from Sheffield and York travelled on coaches to reach the venue and join their Leeds-based colleagues for the day.

IMG_00407wIt was a packed programme of talks on the topic of ‘Data and Methods: Innovations and Connections’, as well as discipline specific interactive breakout sessions. The conference opened with a welcome from the WRDTC Director, Professor Martin Jones.

The keynote speaker, Professor Mark Birkin, Director of the Consumer Data Research Centre, University of Leeds, inspired the audience with his talk and follow up Q&A sessions. Mark spoke about “New forms of data for social research: Big opportunity or big distraction?“

The morning talks also included a range of talks on methodologies, including presentations from,  Dylan Yamada-Rice – Innovations and Connections in Visual Research (School of Education, University of Sheffield), Simone Croft – My experience: using a large birth cohort (WRDTC graduate; Research Associate, Department of Psychology, University of Sheffield) and current WRDTC students.

After lunch, delegates attended Pathway meetings to discuss ‘Data and Methods: Innovations and Connections’ in their fields.

Posters Competition:

Audrey-Dugue-Nevers20 posters by PhD researchers from the three universities were exhibited at the conference, and were entered into a competition. The posters were judged by conference attendees and by two colleagues from the Staff and Departmental Development Unit of the University of Leeds.

The competition was won by Audrey Dugué-Nevers (Politics and International Relations Pathway), with a poster titled China & Soft Power: the Silk Road of Ideas. Audrey was awarded a £50 book voucher.

The second prize (£25 book voucher) was won by Vedran Lesic (Management and Business, Accounting and Finance and Work Psychology Pathway). The title of Vedran’s poster was ‘Do Consumers Know their Electricity Use?‘.
