ONS Internship: Improving and Extending Capital Stock information using micro level business data

August 7, 2014

Office for National Statistics (ONS)

Organisation/ department background

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics and is the recognised national statistical institute for the UK. It is responsible for collecting and publishing statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local levels. It also conducts the census in England and Wales every ten years. ONS plays a leading role in national and international good practice in the production of official statistics. It is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority and although they are separate, they are still closely related.

Project brief

The project aims to update and extend the production of a capital stock data set using micro level business data. ONS does not ask firms what their capital stocks are; hence, the capital stocks data set needs to be ‘constructed’. Capital stocks are a key part of understanding both the growth and fluctuations of GDP, therefore, being of great interest for economic researchers and decision makers. The applicant will work with one of ONS’ analysis teams that will provide direction and support.

The Virtual Microdata Laboratory holds a version of the Capital Stock data set, which creates a firm level estimate of capital stock for the years 1979-2006. Work can be carried out by a postgraduate student to improve the currently available capital stock dataset and to work on methods to extend the capital stock dataset. The eventual aim is for a well documented and clear syntax to be made available to researchers working on data held in the Virtual Micro Laboratory and this project will provide the initial steps towards this aim.
