Leeds Data Science Society

Ning Lu tells us about the society he co-funded, Leeds Data Science Society

Tell us a bit about the Leeds Data Science Society…

Our aim is to provide a space where students can learn and exchange ideas about how data can be used to transform everyday lives – it can inform anything from online dating, to decision making. We started the Leeds Data Science Society 15 months ago and have grown to over 200 member s and numerous industry partners. Professors, industry academics and advisers all support the society, as well as various University departments such as the Maths and Business departments. It’s become quite a ‘beloved society’ in the University. Our events began as workshops and training sessions delivered by Professors who were tasked with a requirement to speak about something ‘fun’ and teach us something unique about data. We wanted to move away from the traditional lecture structure. We have now made connections with external companies who we invite to Leeds to conduct workshops focussed on how to develop career-driven data skills.

What’s the unique thing about Leeds Data Science Society…

We treat our society as a start-up where our aim is always to connect with industry. That’s something that separates us from traditional student societies – our focus is much more career driven. We chose to collaborate with corporates because we wanted to give our members a real-life sense of a working with data: the journey that takes them through the steps of finding data, understanding data, the challenges of analysing data and finally, providing business insight.
