Critical Race and Ethnicities Network (CREN)
The Critical Race and Ethnicities Network (CREN) aims to foster a strong research community of Critical Race and Ethnicities postgraduate researchers across the three White Rose Institutions. Over the past six months, CREN has established a significant presence on all three campuses, built up through a series of events, which focused on issues of criticality and ethics in research, tackling racism and xenophobia on campus and developing strong peer support systems and networks across universities.
Feedback from these events has indicated that the network has achieved its aims, and it will continue to do so through further initiatives. Several events have already been planned for the next few months across the three White Rose universities, as outlined below:
Wednesday 27th May 2015
“Surviving in a White Institution — a half day symposium”
Room 12.25, Social Sciences Building, University of Leeds
A half day symposium featuring a brilliant range of speakers, brought together to discuss strategies and survival tips for students and academics of colour who are navigating the oppressive structures of ‘white’ universities. Followed by a drinks reception. Registration necessary.
Thursday 11th June 2015
“Negotiated Intimacy: Same-Sex Contract Marriage in China”
A seminar with Dr Hongwei Bao (University of Nottingham)
ATB/042, Seebohm Rowntree Building, University of York
A two hour seminar with Dr Hongwei Bao, which explores themes of queer identities and masculinities in contemporary China. Followed by a drinks reception.

CREN Annual Conference
HRI & ICOSS, University of Sheffield
Featuring keynote speeches from Professor Ann Phoenix (IoE) and Dr Nathaniel Adam Tobias Coleman (UCL), and a poetry performance from critically acclaimed poet Anthony Anaxagorou, this one-day conference at the University of Sheffield is a chance for postgraduates working in the field to present papers, exchange ideas, and develop networks within CREN.
