Date - Thursday, 7th June 2018 (2:00 pm - 5:00 pm)

Studying Civil Society

Date & Time: Thursday 7 June 2018, 2pm – 5pm

Venue: Derwent College, Room D/056, University of York, Heslington, York, YO10 5DD

bailey-davidCivil society is a prominent focus of analysis across the social sciences, but can remain conceptually fuzzy and be challenging to empirically gain traction over. The overall aims of this session are to identify innovative approaches to the study of civil society, and to support PhD candidates’ efforts to design and communicate an approach that advances scholarship in their field of inquiry.

This workshop will provide two lines of investigation into approaches to the study of civil society. In the first session, David Bailey (Department of Political Science and International Studies, University of Birmingham) will reflect on the operationalisation of the concept in his recent study of European anti-austerity movements. In the second session, members of the CDD Pathway will outline and receive feedback on their approach to studying civil society.
